“QR Codes”- Part 2 of Taking Full Advantage of Cell Phone Technology

While covering South by Southwest, Gina Trapani from Fast Company saw funky square dot configurations spotted everywhere.

So what are they?

They are QR codes. A QR code is a two-dimensional bar code created by the Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The “QR” is derived from “Quick Response”, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR codes are now used in a much broader context, including both commercial tracking applications and convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users (known as mobile tagging).

This technology originated in Japan where it is already a way of life, but it is just starting to gain traction in mainstream America as smart phones grow in popularity.

What is required?

To read QR codes, your phone needs a camera and an installed QR code reader software. Do a search on your phone or on the web for a “QR reader” and download the app to your phone.

So how do QR codes work for the end user?

When you see a QR code, point your phone’s camera with the QR reader. The reader will quick scan the code and instantly it takes you to the business’ Web site.

What can the technology do for your business?

  • Lead customers to reviews to see what other users think about your business
  • Send them to a coupon page that your business has posted on your site
  • Allow customers to instantly leave a review about your business they just experienced. Great viral marketing at it’s best.

How do you generate these codes?

There are many QR code generators out there. You have to figure out what works best for you. Make sure if it is a commercial venture that you use an authorized generator. There are tons out there that are for non-commercial use only.

Want to try this out?

Here is one for you to try out. (hint: it will lead you to this blog.) Just point your reader and … you are now a QR user.

As the smart phones become a way of life, it will be interesting to see how this technology will be implemented within the next few years.
